To follow up my list of my favourite YA book of 2014, I thought it might be a good idea to tell you about my favourite songs of 2014. Along with great books, great music pulled me through this year of study. So here, in no particular order, are my favourite songs of 2014
Artist: Hopium feat. Phoebe Lou
"It couldn't be your fault
When conspiracy sounds so sweet
You fed yourself on lies
Now you're fat with bullshit."
Why I Love It: This reminded me of what my life used to be like: a whole lot of nothing. Also, the dreamy electronic music combined with poignant lyrics really spoke to me.
Artist: Angus and Julia Stone
"Oh, she's a million miles away
Oh, a million shores and bays
And all I can think about is sailing by
Having you here by my side
Oh stay here with me, don't go
Oh stay here with me, don't go."
Why I Love It: Angus and Julia Stone created a song that can make anyone love-sick.
Artist: Arcade Fire
Genre: Indie Rick
"Down on their knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
Why I Love It: This feels very much like a song that validates a lot of LGBTQ+ peoples existence (to me, at least). People can try to deny them rights or downright deny their existence, but that doesn't change the fact that LGBTQ+ people are out there and that they deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness.
Artist: Boy & Bear
"So we run through the jungle
And I can feel the rhythm of war
You see I'm fighting
But I just can't fight anymore
I'm in awe."
Why I Love It: Towards the end there's great saxophone solo. It's so good that I will skip to that part of the song almost every time I listen to it.
Artist: Kimbra (or the woman from that featured in this song)
Genre: Indie Pop/Pop/Synthpop/R&B/Jazz
"MJ & Mariah
Nirvana & Aaliyah
R. Kelly & Mary Blige
TLC & Left Eye."
Why I Love It: The song has a catchy up-beat rhythm that is completely infectious. Plus I'm feeling some Sleigh Bell vibes when Kimbra speaks lyrics instead of singing them. This is similar to parts of Kids by Sleigh Bells.
Yellow Flicker Beat
Genre: Art Pop/Dream Pop/Indie Pop/Electropop
"And now people talk to me, I’m slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me."
Why I Love It: I didn't think much of this song until I saw Lorde's performance (above) of this song. The live version brings out the strength in this song and Lorde as a performer.
Artists: Japanese Wallpaper feat. Jesse Davidson
"Frozen in love, how would that make you feel again?
To feel again?
If you wanna be my friend
You've gotta stop being so damn good to me."
Why I Love It: This song is another dreamy song that I like. It's a song of unrequited love from a friend and I think everyone can relate to that.
Tell Me It's Okay
Genre: Alternative Rock/Pop Punk/Emo
"I thought it was my right
To be as sorry as I wanted to be
I wasted all my teenage years
Being a misery factory
But something had to give
I had to finally see light
I think at 23
It’s time to practice what I preach."
Why I Love It: Paramore is my all time favourite band. This song, after a year of study, came out at the perfect time. I finally feel at a really good place and this song just reinforces the good vibes I feel.
So, there it is. I probably missed out on many songs that I love. Honourable mentions go to First Aid Kit, Courtney Barnett and Big Deal who all released great songs this year. I love these artists and you guys should definitely check them out. I also only included one Paramore song, but really the entire Paramore: Self Titled Deluxe album they released this year is great.
Let me know if there's any music I missed out on in 2014 or even if you disagree with my choices.
