Time Magazine is asking people what the worst words of 2014 and that they should be banned in 2015. In this group falls the words: bae, literally, kale and feminism.
According to Time Magazine, this is why you should vote feminism should be banned in 2015:
You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.
Despite what Time Magazine believes, feminism should not be banned. A feminist is a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes. Yes, that means women, men and all genders. It is important for everyone, celebrity or not, to use this word properly.
Words can fuel a movement and help people get rights they need. This is why so many LGBTQIA folks define themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual. These words can be used to start a conversation and stop prejudices. They can help people.
You can't ban an entire word just because you don't like or understand it. As The Mary Sue puts it: So thanks, Time, for suggesting we get rid of the name of the movement that helped women gain the right to vote, own property, and initiate divorces. Political and philosophical movements don’t trend because they’re popular, Time. They trend because they’re necessary.
It doesn't matter if feminism gets voted in or not because we will continue to use the word and get more rights for all genders. Everyone deserves to live in a word where they can vote, own property, get divorced and even walk down the street without getting harassed.
